Learn lifesaving skills at Cornwall Air Ambulance open day

Cornwall Air Ambulance will be demonstrating lifesaving skills at its next open day on September 8.

The charity will give the public the opportunity to find out what a defibrillator is and how to use it effectively. Visitors will also be able to test out their CPR technique.

Thomas Hennessy Jones, Critical Care Paramedic, said: “The chain of survival starts with early intervention. For every minute it takes to get a defibrillator to someone in cardiac arrest, their chances of survival reduce by up to 10%. Minutes really do matter when it comes to saving lives. If you’ve never used a defibrillator or performed CPR before then it can be a very daunting prospect, so we want to raise awareness of what people can do in an emergency and give them the confidence to act while they wait for further medical help.”

The event, which will be held in the charity’s airbase at Trevithick Downs, will also give visitors a behind-the-scenes view of the helicopter and specialist equipment used by the crew every day.

There will be a chance to grab a bargain at the pop-up charity shop, and relax with some tea and cake.

Gemma Kidd, In-house Events and Fundraising Officer for Cornwall Air Ambulance, said: “This open day will be educational and fun. It’s a great opportunity to find out about the work the charity does and meet some of our crew. Our events are family friendly and there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. Come along for a great day out and help keep the helicopter flying.”

Cornwall Air Ambulance open day takes place on Sunday 8 September from 11am-3pm. Entry free, donations welcome.
