Tips for Preparing for These Cornwall Running Events
Whilst you may want to throw yourself in the deep end, preparing for running events is important so that you can feel your best on the day, achieve the results you want and experience a smooth recovery after the event. Whether participating in a charity fun run or a more extreme, tough-terrain challenge, here are some top tips for running preparation.
1. Create a Training Plan
Whatever the distance, give yourself enough time to train based on your experience. If you are taking part in a 5K run, 6-8 weeks of preparation will be enough; however, realistically, for a marathon, you need between 3-6 months to prepare your body. Make sure you progress your training plan gradually to prevent injuries and schedule rest days so your body can recover and adapt over time.
2. Focus on Nutrition and Hydration
Eating a healthy, balanced diet in the weeks leading up to an event can support your body in performing at its best. Make sure you are eating enough carbohydrates for energy, protein for muscle repair and healthy fats for endurance. It is also important to drink plenty of water on the day of the event to stay hydrated. For longer, more challenging runs, you may consider electrolyte drinks, small snacks, energy bars and gels to sustain your body.
3. Practise Your Race Day Conditions
Practising your race day conditions can support you to perform your best. For example, if your race starts at 8 am, practise running in the morning. If your race is on the coast path with many steep hills and descents, practice running on the coast path. You can also practise your pacing strategy to learn to conserve energy for later stages.
What to Bring on Race Day
Depending on the length and environment of your running event, you will need to bring varying pieces of running gear and equipment. This equipment can make a huge difference in your comfort and performance levels!
Use your common sense to choose relevant equipment for the list below:
- Comfortable running trainers
- Light-weight, breathable running clothes
- Weather-specific items (sunhat, sunglasses, lip, balm, warm layers)
- Lightweight, waterproof jacket
- Water bottle (+ Hydration pack/belt for longer runs)
- Electrolyte drinks
- Energy gels and chews
- Safety pins for your race bib
- GPS watch/tracker app
- First aid/blister pack
- Mobile phone
- Portable charger
- Recover snacks
- Emergency money
