Experience being a pilot at Cornwall Air Ambulance Open Day

Cornwall Air Ambulance is giving visitors the chance to experience what it is like to be a helicopter pilot when it opens its doors to the public on Saturday 8 September.

For the first time ever at an Open Day event visitors will be able to have a go at hovering a helicopter using the latest VR technology, with guidance from Cornwall Air Ambulance pilot, Captain Craig Webster.

As well as flying a virtual helicopter, there will also be the opportunity to get up close to the real deal. You will be able to see inside the helicopter and get a good look at the specialist equipment the crew uses. There will also be a rapid response car in the hangar for the first time, giving you the chance to see what kit they contain.

It is the charity’s first Open Day since it launched the New Heli Appeal, which seeks to bring a new generation helicopter to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by April 2020. Visitors will be able to buy tickets for the New Heli Grand Draw and see the winning prize, a BMW 118i Sport, up close.

As usual there will be a chance to grab a bargain at the pop-up charity shop and enjoy a delicious selection of hot food provided this year by Rapid Relief Team.

Captain Craig Webster said: “This is the first time visitors to our headquarters will be able to try virtual helicopter flying, which I think everyone will find really exciting. It’s a great way for our supporters to really experience what it is we do and get a behind the scenes look at the lifesaving charity.”

Visit Cornwall Air Ambulance headquarters, Trevithick Downs, Newquay, between 11am and 3pm on Saturday 8 September. Entry is free to all but donations welcome.
