Martin’s Story

SEARCH OTHER STORIES

Martin was just 20 years old when he was involved in a serious accident which nearly claimed his life.

On December 18 2005, he was travelling to work at the Victoria Inn when he was involved in a head-on collision with another can on the A389 in Lanivet.

Martin was trapped in his car for over 50 minutes while the Fire Service worked to release him.

Cornwall Air Ambulance was tasked to the scene. Paramedics airlifted him to Derriford Hospital.

Martin spent a week in a coma and woke up on Christmas Eve with no memory of what happened. He suffered two broken legs, a fractured knee, jaw, ribs and collarbone and sustained damage to his eye socket.

In the subsequent years, Martin has undergone many operations, and despite best efforts, he eventually lost his leg five years ago as a result of the injuries he sustained over a decade ago.

Martin said: “People with less injuries have died. Someone was looking over me that day. I’m lucky I still have one of my legs. Cornwall Air Ambulance saved my life.”

Since the accident, Martin has had to change his career plans. He has since married and has three children.
