Fly a Cornwall Air Ambulance mission at the Royal Cornwall Show

Visitors to the Royal Cornwall Show will for the first time will be able to fly an emergency mission as a member of the Cornwall Air Ambulance crew, thanks to the launch of a new 360 degree virtual reality film.

The 360 film will be unveiled at stand 471 on the morning of Thursday 8 June. Once users strap on a headset, they will find themselves sat in the air ambulance helicopter as it takes off and speeds at 140mph to a patient in urgent need of help.

Look to the right and viewers will see Cornwall Air Ambulance pilot Captain Craig Webster at the controls of the MD902 helicopter.

Captain Webster, who has already had a peak at the film, said: “Once you put on the headset you are completely immersed in the virtual reality world. It feels as if you are actually flying in the helicopter because you have 360 degree vision – you see everything that myself and the rest of the crew would see as we fly on a mission. However, I’ll admit it was a little eerie when I put on the headset and found I was sitting next to myself in the helicopter!”

Show goers will also be able to buy air ambulance branded cardboard 360 viewers so they can relive the mission again.

This year’s Royal Cornwall Show is extra special for Cornwall Air Ambulance as it has been named an official charity of the event, in what is the air ambulance’s 30 anniversary year. Fundraising at the event will help fund the 700 plus lifesaving missions the crew carry out each year.
